The Pöstlingbergbahn

For more than 110 years, the Pöstlingbergbahn (Pöstlingberg Railway) has been fascinating visitors from all over the world with its remarkable and idyllic route. The new Pöstlingbergbahn has established a direct connection between the Hauptplatz of Linz and the Pöstlingberg.

Get on a train and enjoy a ride up to the hilltop overlooking Linz. The low-floor design of the new carriages makes the Pöstlingbergbahn easy and comfortable to use. For nostalgia fans, rides in revitalised old carriages are offered subject to availability. At the end of the journey you will enjoy a striking view over Linz or you can change trains and let the Grottenbahn take you to a world of dwarves and fairy tales.

Over a distance of 4.14 km, the Pöstlingbergbahn negotiates an altitude difference of 255 metres in approx. 20 minutes. Its gauge was adjusted from 1,000 mm to 900 mm, making for a smooth integration into the public transport network of LINZ AG LINIEN and allowing the Pöstlingbergbahn to run all the way to the Hauptplatz of Linz now.

Tip: What about a visit to the small but very interesting Pöstlingbergbahn museum?

Holders of valid annual LINZ AG LINIEN passes (transferable and senior network passes, semeseter tickets, job tickets) or monthly LINZ AG LINIEN passes (transferable and senior network passes, students and apprentice tickets, apprentice monthly passes and Aktivpass monthly passes) are entitled to use the Pöstlingbergbahn without any extra charge. The same applies to holders of valid monthly, semester or annual passes issued by the Upper Austrian transport association OÖVV, provided that these passes cover transportation in the Linz urban area (ticket specifying “Linz +K”, “Linz+Stadtverkehr” or "Linz+Kernzone”). Please note that holders of OÖVV passes issued free of charge or at a reduced price for students and apprentices must pay the applicable fare.

A valid ticket entitles its holder to take along two children under six years of age without any extra charge. This rule does not apply for groups of kindergarten children, in which case an individual children’s ticket must be bought for each child.

Tickets are available at vending machines with touch-screens, at the LINZ AG Customer Centre at Hauptplatz 34, 4020 Linz, at selected tobacconists in the city centre and at Hauptbahnhof as well as at the Tourist Office on Hauptplatz.
